Lunchtime Seminars for CIBUL PhD students

General Guidelines

General Information

Students supervised by CIBUL staff are required to attend all lunchtime seminars for IB research postgraduate students . Each IB student already presents his or her work within the seminar series once a year. For students currently registered as Postgraduate Research, MPhil or Provisional PhD, a seminar presentation in the first year of registration is part of the requirements for upgrade to registration for a PhD. Once registered for a PhD, students are again required to present their work annually. A record of your seminar attendance will be kept. If you are unable to attend a seminar you must inform Dr Hanna Gajewska-De Mattos (hgdm@lubs.leeds.ac.uk) in advance, giving a valid reason. You should also inform your supervisor about the reasons of your absence.

Preparation

The seminars are very informal, but you may consider including some of these points in your presentation (suggestion: emphasise the points on which you would like to get advice):

  1. The general aims and objectives of your research.
  2. A brief indication of the main relevant strands in the literature.
  3. Your specific research objectives in the light of the general aims and the existing literature.
  4. Details of the methodology or methodologies to be employed in pursuing the research objectives.
  5. Where appropriate, details of data sources, requirements for data collection, requirements re access to companies, etc.
  6. Where appropriate, discussion of methods to be employed in analysing the data collected.
  7. Where appropriate, a brief provisional Table of Contents for your dissertation.
  8. Relevant findings of the research to date.
  9. If not covered under the above headings, please indicate specific issues on which you would like the participants to make comments.
Seminars

Please note that there will be 2 speakers at each of the seminars, each having approximately 30 minutes for their presentation and 15 minutes for questions from the audience. It is up to you how you use your 45 minutes. Please bear in mind, however, that you cannot exceed 30 minutes for your presentation since you will need a minimum of 15 minutes for questions and comments (but it is perfectly acceptable for you to have a slightly shorter presentation to leave a bit more room for comments).

After your presentation

You are required to lodge the handouts of your presentation with the LUBS Research Office.
